Thursday, June 6, 2013 (Thompson Falls, MT)

Another pretty day, should be a good travel day. By the time we get up and around, have breakfast and get things packed up, it is usually right around 10:30 by the time we are hitting the road. It was the same today. We were a little concerned with our departure, we had to make a pretty tight right hand turn, but we made it out just fine, whew.

It was a pretty drive to Thompson Falls, the majority was along the Clark Fork River. The drive was good until we turned off onto the road to come into the campground. We had scoped it out on the internet, but nowhere had read that there was a 13’ 6" bridge clearance. When we’ve measured our rig, it is around 13’ 4" or a little more depending on how much air is in the airbags….Shall we try it? Rich let the air out of the airbags on the truck and I got out and walked in front of the truck as Rich slowly started inching under the bridge. We cleared the first support, but the second support looked a little banged up, hmmm, I wonder if it’s shorter? Rich got out and took a look and he thought we’d be fine, so I hopped in and off we went, we made it just fine. That is one thing that we always try and scope out on our route, we don’t want to run into something we can’t get through and have to back track. Come to find out later, there are two entrances into the park, the one we took and then another one that you don’t have to cross a bridge at all. Originally when we checked the route, the GPS had us taking the second route, but for some reason when we plugged it in today, it sent us down the first route and we didn’t notice it until later. Another good thing to make sure we check.

We got checked in and they escorted us to our site. It was rather interesting. The campsite is in two levels and we were going to the second level. To get there you drive right by, and I mean right by – you could reach out and practically touch it – a private residence that isn’t related to the RV park at all – very odd. And then you have to jump back onto a public road for about 50 ft and then pull into the upper level entry, luckily there is not much traffic on that public road. Our campsite is pretty nice and quiet except for the occasional train that goes by.

It is very warm here and humid, it got into the upper 80’s today. We come from the dry desert and aren’t used to the humidity yet. We actually had to turn on our air conditioner for awhile to cool things down this evening. I’m glad we have full hook ups. This is the best price we’ve had yet for full hook ups.

After we got set up, we headed into town to check it out and find a grocery store, we needed to stock up on some fresh veggies. Rich used to travel to Thompson Falls to do computer work for a mill site his company had here but the mill is no longer here. It seems like a nice town, they have a few attractions that we may have to check out while we are here.

We got back and had dinner and then took a walk around the campground and saw this turtle.
Gracie had never seen a turtle before and was bound and determined that she wanted to get close to it and check it out.  This campground had a horseshoe pit and the horseshoes to go along with it, so we tossed a few around.  Needless to say, horseshoes is not my game.  They also had that other game that I don't know what it is called, but you have two balls tied on either end of a string and you throw them at the ladder type structure, so we tried that also.  Again, not my game.  I don't know how you keep score, but Rich had me beat no matter which way you looked at it.  =). There is also a trail down to the river that we’ll explore tomorrow. It was hot and sticky and the mosquito’s were starting to come out, so it was time to head in for the comfort of our nice cool fiver. We changed to mountain time zone today, so we lost an hour but the odd thing is that it is still so light out for the time of day.  I guess it is because we are so close to the two different time zones.
